School Health Officer

Job Purpose

As the School Health Officer at the International Christian School, Hong Kong, you will provide professional nursing support to students, faculty and staff.  The primary work location will be on Shek Mun Campus.

The position will start in October 2024.

What you will do:

  • Provide professional nursing support during the school day including but not limited to first-aid and emergency care to students, faculty and staff who are injured or become ill, as well as to athletes during practice and games; visit and be present during matches to provide immediate medical aid if needed.

  • Prioritize and deal with each case received as appropriate. Communicate with the line manager, or parents clearly and make proper arrangements to send the patient back home, or to the hospital for further treatment.

  • Administer prescribed medications as per physician’s instruction for common symptoms (e.g. flu, fever, etc.) Advise and educate patients and/or parents on follow-up care, immunization, etc.

  • Collaborate with another School Health Officer to provide first aid service to after school activities, first-aid and CPR training to new faculty and staff, and assist in the control of communicable disease.

  • Follow through the child safety procedures and protocols. Work with teachers, designated safeguarding personnels and professional bodies for implementing relevant protocols or schoolwide initiatives when required.

  • Maintain good housekeeping including hygiene, clear record of inventory and medication, student health and immunization records, and accident reports.

We are looking for someone with:

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing with a valid nursing (enrolled nurse or above) and first-aid licence.  Certified first-aid trainers are preferred.

  • Certified CPR trainer under NUCO, or willing to get certified as an NUCO CPR trainer will be preferred.

  • 5 years’ experience in pediatric/adolescent healthcare, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience specializing in pediatrics and adolescent health.  Relevant experience gained in local schools or similar will be highly preferred.

  • Experience working with athletic first-aid and injury prevention will be preferred.

  • Prior child safeguarding training regarding medical care and medical information in schools would be beneficial.

  • Solid experience in development and execution of protocols and procedures of first-aid and emergency care for injuries is required.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Cantonese), interpersonal and collaborative skills to work as a team, and build a trusting relationship with patients and parents.

  • Mature, highly organized and self initiative, with the ability to make quick and accurate decisions with a calm demeanor under pressure.

  • Solid understanding of government requirements on medical health and safety in school.

  • The candidate will be working from 9:30am to 6:00pm.  S/he should also be fully cognizant of the confidential nature of work and the need to work outside normal office hours as and when required.
